Design the production flow as one timed system.
Cooling and dimensional stability
Fresh mouldings may distort if dropped, stacked or gripped too soon. Controlled conveyors, nests or cooling fixtures can support critical features while the part reaches a suitable condition for inspection or assembly. Product orientation should be maintained if later stations depend on it.
Finishing and quality checks
The line can separate sprues, remove gates or flash, present surfaces to a camera and route accepted and rejected components securely. A useful inspection specification defines the visible defect, acceptable limit, presentation and action after a failed result rather than simply asking for “AI vision”.
Assembly and secondary operations
Robots can load components into fixtures for clipping, pressing, fastening, welding or functional testing where the process is technically suitable. Printing, labelling or marking can be added when product identity, orientation and data ownership are clearly defined.
Counting, packing and palletising
Ordered placement from the mould can simplify counting, tray loading and case packing. Buffers accommodate brief interruptions without immediately stopping the moulding machine, while traceability and reject logic keep incomplete or failed product out of accepted output.
Balance the cycle
| Critical cycle | Keep robot entry, grip and mould-clear motion inside the available window |
|---|---|
| Slower process | Use parallel stations, indexed fixtures or buffer capacity |
| Quality failure | Define secure reject routing, counts and recovery sequence |
| Line stop | Agree accumulation, controlled stop and restart behaviour |
Frequently asked questions
What processes can be automated after injection moulding?
Typical post-mould processes include controlled cooling, sprue and gate removal, trimming, inspection, leak or functional testing, printing, labelling, assembly, counting, tray loading, case packing and palletising.
Does every operation need to match the moulding cycle?
The complete line must sustain the required average output, but slower operations can be decoupled using buffers, multiple fixtures, parallel stations or indexed handling so they do not hold the mould open.
Can existing downstream equipment be integrated?
Often yes. The equipment condition, controls, guarding, product interface, rate and responsibility boundaries must be assessed before the final sequence and conformity route are agreed.
