Repeatable insert placement

Insert moulding and overmoulding automation

Manual insert loading exposes output to orientation errors, missing inserts and variable cycle timing. Automation creates a controlled chain from bulk or tray presentation through mould placement to post-mould inspection, with clear recovery logic when a part is not correctly presented.

Quick answer

Insert moulding automation feeds, orients and places one or more inserts into the open mould, verifies that each is seated and coordinates the next injection cycle. The system can then remove, inspect and route the overmoulded component.

Build the solution around the production requirement.

Feeding and presentation

Inserts may arrive from bowl feeders, flex feeders, magazines, trays or operator-loaded nests. The right method follows geometry, surface sensitivity, variant count, cleanliness and rate. Buffering helps prevent a short upstream interruption from stopping the moulding machine immediately.

End-of-arm tooling and seating

EOAT must pick the insert without damage, maintain orientation and place it to the specified datum. Mechanical compliance, sensing and a controlled insertion path can help manage small tolerances. Positive checks should confirm pickup, placement and tool release.

Combined unload-and-load cycles

A single robot can sometimes remove the finished overmoulded component and load fresh inserts during one mould-open window. This reduces equipment but makes payload, tooling envelope and cycle analysis especially important.

Inspection and traceability

Vision or sensors can confirm insert presence, position or key finished-product features. Where traceability matters, the cell can associate results with cavity, batch, fixture or production data and route rejects securely.

Frequently asked questions

What inserts can be robot-loaded?

Metal fasteners, contacts, bushes, magnets, plastic parts and other stable inserts can be candidates, subject to geometry and presentation.

Can inserts be loaded from trays?

Yes. Trays are useful for delicate or pre-oriented inserts and can support variant control, though tray exchange and empty-tray handling must be planned.

How do you prevent mould damage from a misplaced insert?

The cell uses defined seating, pickup and release checks plus machine permission logic. The exact verification method follows the insert and mould risk.
