Controlled runner removal

Sprue pickers for repeatable separation

Uncontrolled runners can mix with good components, interrupt operators and make regrind handling inconsistent. A correctly specified sprue picker creates a dependable path from the open mould to a chute, bin, conveyor or granulator while keeping the moulding cycle protected.

Quick answer

A sprue picker removes the cold runner or sprue from the mould at a repeatable point in the cycle and routes it away from saleable parts. Pneumatic units suit straightforward duties; servo sprue pickers provide programmable motion, controlled placement and greater process flexibility.

Build the solution around the production requirement.

Pneumatic or servo sprue picker

A pneumatic picker can provide an economical pick-and-drop motion for simple, stable applications. Servo control adds programmable positions, speed profiles and controlled release. The choice follows sprue geometry, gripping point, machine size, vertical and kick stroke, destination and cycle requirement.

Part and sprue separation

Where a dual-arm or twin-gripper system removes both streams, the end-of-arm tooling can retain the finished component while directing the runner separately. Confirmation sensors, chutes and controlled release reduce mixed material and make the downstream flow easier to supervise.

Granulator and regrind integration

The runner can be delivered into a guarded granulator or recycling route. The interface must account for access, noise, dust, bin levels, jams and the required machine response. We design the transfer as part of the cell rather than treating the picker as an isolated accessory.

Retrofit checks

A retrofit review covers robot mounting, machine-clear space, traverse and vertical strokes, guarding, safe access, electrical supply and the moulding-machine handshake. The sprue must also present consistently enough for a gripper to find and retain it.

Frequently asked questions

What is a sprue picker?

It is a compact robot or manipulator that enters the open mould, grips the sprue or runner and moves it to a controlled destination.

Can one robot remove both the component and sprue?

Yes. Dual-arm manipulators or suitable multi-gripper EOAT can retain separate streams, provided payload, space and cycle time allow it.

Will a sprue picker work with a granulator?

It can be integrated with a chute or conveyor feeding a granulator, with guarding and control responses designed for the complete process.
